Due to controversial statements, Karla Sofía Gascón was removed from Netflix’s award campaigns, despite being nominated for ‘Best Actress’ at the Oscars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , Netflix – the distributor of Emilia Pérez’s film – announced that it will not pay for the Spanish actress’s travel and accommodation expenses to Los Angeles to campaign for the award. At the same time, they will not mention Karla Sofía Gascón in emails and posters sent to voters and will remove her image from billboards.

The actress, born in 1972, was scheduled to attend the American Film Institute’s AFI luncheon and pre-Oscar awards such as the Critics’ Choice Awards this weekend. However, after Netflix’s move, Karla will not be able to attend important parties in Hollywood before the Academy members vote on the winner of the golden statue.

Karla Sofía Gascón is up for an Oscar for her transgender role in the film ‘Emilia Peréz’.

The reason why Netflix “erased” Karla came from the actress accusing Fernanda Torres’ team of playing dirty tricks on her to increase her chances of winning, in an interview with Folha de S Paulo. A journalist quickly “dug up” the actress’s negative social media posts in 2020–2021, causing public outrage. On her personal page, she expressed her sarcastic attitude towards Muslims, excluded Asians during the COVID-19 pandemic, mocked the Oscars for being biased towards people of color, and criticized many stars.

“The Oscars are increasingly looking like an indie film ceremony. I didn’t know if I was watching an African film festival, a Korean film festival, or a Black Lives Matter protest. It was an ugly gala night,” the actor wrote after the 2021 Oscars ceremony brought many wins to filmmakers of African and Asian descent.

In another post, the actress joked that schools would teach students in Arabic instead of English, referring to the large Muslim population in Europe. At the same time, many people also discovered that Karla insulted Adele’s appearance and indirectly criticized Miley Cyrus’s gender.

Just became famous, the Spanish actor got into a big scandal.

After her old posts were dug up, Karla Sofia Gascón quickly locked her account and apologized to her audience. She was insulted and harassed by many people to the point of exhaustion, even death threats.

“I acknowledge that my previous social media posts have hurt many people. As a minority, I understand this pain and am deeply sorry to those I have hurt. I have fought for a better world all my life. I believe that light will always triumph over darkness,” Karle said.

Karla broke down in tears as she spoke about her past posts in an interview with CNN . She insisted she was not a racist, said she admired Muslims, and said her past posts were about Islamic extremists.

However, Karla’s repentance did not receive sympathy. Some viewers said that this was the consequence the actress had to accept. The majority opposed Karla’s actions and asked the Academy to remove her name from the nomination list.

Jacques Audiard, Emilia Pérez ‘s director , expressed his disappointment with the female lead. He said: “I have not spoken to her and do not want to speak to her. She is destroying herself and I cannot intervene. I do not understand why she would harm people who are very close to her.”

Karla and her co-stars accepted the awards for ‘Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ and ‘Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language’ at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards.

Karla Sofía Gascón is the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. In the 97th year, she was nominated alongside Demi Moore (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked).

In Emilia Pérez, Karla plays a mafia boss who fakes his own death and undergoes a sex change to protect his family. She has received much praise from critics. At the closing ceremony of last year’s Cannes Film Festival, she and the other actresses in this film shared the “Best Actress” award.

In the wake of the Spanish actress’ scandal, the Academy decided to keep the nominations as they were. However, this incident also had a big impact on this year’s Oscar ceremony, forcing producers to change the format of announcing the winners.

This year’s ceremony was supposed to invite five previous winners to express their feelings about each nominee. But after much criticism of Karla Sofía Gascón, the show’s producers decided to cut the sharing of their thoughts and just invite last year’s winners to the stage to announce the winner, as is tradition.
